Writers' Room Series

SeriesFest has partnered with Unreal Media and Dilettante Productions on a professional development opportunity for emerging writers in the independent episodic television. SeriesFest will invite select writers to participate in a three-day workshop and month-long follow-up led by Unreal Media with the goal of producing pitch-ready scripted episodic content.

Each Writers Room will tackle the creative development of a new series of varying genres. Writers will use a series bible and pilot outline created by Unreal Media to develop characters, story arcs, and episode outlines for the first season. Along with expanding their writing portfolios, participants are given the opportunity to work alongside a prestigious community of television professionals.

Over the course of the three-day workshop, a hand-picked group of screenwriters, producers, and a head writer will work together to flesh out a new series. During the final day of the workshop, the writers will live-edit the pilot episode, led by Unreal producers and the head writer.

In the month following the workshop, writers will be assigned to complete 1-2 subsequent episodes with the goal of completing a full season that is ready to pitch to networks.

A Brief History of the Unreal Writers Room

In June 2018, Unreal Media hosted their first Mini Writers' Room in Denver, CO. Over the course of 3 days, Unreal hosted 6 screenwriters, 2 producers, and a head writer who fleshed out Unreal's IP, Drop Shot Divas, a web series about the absurdities of a women's suburban tennis league. Using a series bible created by Unreal Media, the writers developed characters, story arcs, and episode outlines for the first season. During the final day of the workshop, the writers live-edited the pilot episode, led by Unreal producers and the head writer. Unreal then hosted a table read of the pilot, using local actors.

In a month-long follow-up, the writers each wrote a ten-minute episode and submitted them to Unreal and the head writer for final editing. At the end of the month Unreal Media had an entire season's worth of scripts ready for production.
